What is the best digital slot car system?

Hafa Adai Slot Car Friends!

Well, it all depends on a few things; first of all, are you new to slot cars? or do you already own slot car equipment?

1. If you are new to slot cars, I would check out all the brands that carry digital systems: Ninco; SCX; Scalextric and Carrera, these are the major brands.

The different brands have different specifications that dictate price and versatility; personally, I like the versatility.  Digital slot cars have to be modified before you can inter-use them on different brands of digital systems.  Unlike analog racing, you can run all brands on all tracks with no modifications provided you stay within the same scale.

Most analog cars can be converted to use on digital systems by adding a chip; however, not all brands make digital chips for other brands of cars.  There is one however, that makes chips for one or two other brands, and that is Scalextirc.  Scalextric makes digital chips for Slot.it and Pioneer cars.  Scalextric also makes different sizes of digital chips for the different types of cars, and in many cases with a little modification, the Scalextric chips can be fitted in many different brands to run on the Scalextric Sport Digital (SSD) system.

2. If you already own slot cars; track; etc... but is not digital, check with the manufacturer to see if they sell digital systems, and if your current equipment can be converted to use with the digital equipment.  In some cases you can use the regular analog track and convert to digital by adding a few lane change track pieces, and a digital power base and controllers.  In other cases, you have to start from scratch.  Not all brands have digital chips to modify their cars from analog to digital, but can be done if you're mechanically and electrically inclined, but you may void the warranty

So, that being said, do a little research, and find out what best suites your situation and budget.

Tip: SSD is one of the most versatile systems.  The use of other brand cars can be a fairly simple modification, and all of the analog track can be used in their digital system with the addition of lane change track pieces, and a digital power base.

Happy Slotting!
